The Birthday Party ist eine hypnotische Reise in die fragilen Kindheitserinnerungen des Filmemachers: Der junge Francesco kommt verspätet auf der Geburtstagsfeier von Enrico im italienischen Hinterland an. Die anderen Kinder auf dem Bauernhof sind ins Spiel vertieft und Francesco findet keinen Anschluss. In den Augen Francescos bleibt alles unnahbar und bedrohlich – der rabiate Umgang der Kinder untereinander, aber auch das rohe Verhalten des angetrunkenen Vaters, der plötzlich in der Tür steht. Dann entgleitet die Situation, als die zuvor mit offenen Augen schlafende und auf einen Rollstuhl angewiesene Großmutter im Dunkel der Nacht verschwindet.
The Birthday Party is a hypnotic journey into the filmmaker's fragile childhood memories: young Francesco arrives late at Enrico's birthday party in the Italian countryside. The other children on the farm are engrossed in their games and he is unable to make friends. In Francesco's eyes, everything remains inaccessible and threatening - the children's rowdy behaviour with each other as well as the crude behaviour of the drunken father who suddenly appears at the door. The situation escalates when the wheelchair-bound grandmother, who was previously sleeping with her eyes open, disappears into the darkness of the night.
