Umwege plays with the documentary form to unmask »typical« female life paths and the 1968 movement’s inherent machismo: Barbara drops out of school, escapes the confines of her parents’ home in Switzerland for Munich, where she first ends up in a commune and eventually in the arms of Kai, an aspiring urban planner, and fights against the emergency laws. When she realizes that her situation has not fundamentally changed, she follows her own principles. Susanne Beyeler’s short film is partly autobiographically inspired; the title aptly foreshadows the life journey of the filmmaker, feminist, environmental activist, and Sufi mystic, who passed away in 2012.
