Content notes:
Forced by the Russian occupation, Svitlana fled her Ukrainian town by the sea. Trying to hold onto happy memories, she turns to satellite images to access her home at a time when physical presence is made impossible. On phone calls, she listens to stories about the shining sea left behind, punctuated by alarms of the next attack. While the film captures how technologies shape the lives of refugees, director Nataliya Bek-Gergard simultaneously centers the body and its senses through the question of how to stay in contact with a place, its people and culture. Geometry of Return explores the somatic dimensions of being violently uprooted by turning film itself into a medium of connection and a possibility for touch, a way to put your hand in the water of the sea one more time.
