»Let’s do it! Und wenn wir es dann gemacht haben, können wir anfangen, es zu kritisieren.« So war der Plan und so ist es passiert. Beim 41. Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg gab es einen runden Tisch zu der Frage, ob es einen Kanon für die kurze Form braucht. Kanon ist griechisch und bedeutet »Regel, Maßstab, Richtschnur«. Ein Filmkanon ist also eine Anzahl von Werken, auf die sich eine Gruppe verständigt, um so die Filme einerseits im kulturellen Gedächtnis zu bewahren und andererseits einen Zugang für Interessierte zu schaffen. Der Kanon »Greatest Short Films of All Time« existiert jetzt und was nun? Wir diskutieren Pros und Cons eines Kanons im Allgemeinen und dieses Kurzfilm-Kanons im Speziellen.

Das Gespräch findet im Rahmen der Reihe THE FUTURE OF SHORTS statt, die Reto Bühler 2014 (zu der Zeit Künstlerischer Leiter der Internationalen Kurzfilmtage Winterthur) initiiert hat.

»Let’s do it! And after we’ve done it, we can begin to criticise it.« That was the plan and that’s what happened. The 41st Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg featured a round table on the question whether a canon is needed for the short film. The word canon comes from the Greek and means »rule, standard, guideline«. A film canon is therefore a collection of works agreed upon by a group, with the aim of preserving these films in the cultural memory on the one hand, while providing access to them for those interested on the other. The »Greatest« Short Films of All Time canon now exists – so what next? We will discuss the pros and cons of a canon in general, and this short film canon in particular.

The discussion takes place as part of the series THE FUTURE OF SHORTS, which was initiated by Reto Bühler in 2014 (at the time artistic director of the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur).
