Short Film Program Eva Giolo
Die belgische Künstlerin und Filmemacherin Eva Giolo steht für ein Kino der Beobachtung und der Taktilität. Ihre vor allem auf analogem Film basierende Arbeit richtet den Blick besonders auf weibliche Erfahrungswelten und untersucht mit experimentellen und dokumentarischen Mitteln Themen wie Intimität, Beständigkeit und Erinnerung sowie Sprache und Semiotik.
Ihr Film Flowers Blooming in Our Throats aus dem Jahr 2020 war für den Europäischen Filmpreis nominiert und erhielt den Hauptpreis bei »THIS IS SHORT 2021«, einer u. a. von den Internationalen Kurzfilmtagen Oberhausen und den Vienna Shorts präsentierten Online-Plattform. Giolo ist außerdem Mitbegründerin von »elephy«, einer von Künstler:innen getragenen Produktions- und Distributionsorganisation für Film- und Medienkunst in Brüssel. Für das Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg hat Eva Giolo ein Programm mit fünf kurzen 16mm-Arbeiten aus den Jahren 2019 bis 2024 zusammengestellt, das sie selbst präsentieren wird. Eva Giolo hat außerdem den diesjährigen Festivaltrailer Opera produziert.
Giolo proposes a cinema of observation and tactility. Working primarily with analogue film, her work places particular focus on the female experience, employing experimental and documentary strategies to explore themes of intimacy, permanence and memory, along with the analysis of language and semiotics.
Giolo's 2020 film, Flowers Blooming in Our Throats, was nominated for the European Film Award and awarded the Top Prize at »THIS IS SHORT 2021«, a collaborative online event co-presented by the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Vienna Short Film Festival, and other European organizations. She is co-founder of »elephy«, an artist-run production and distribution organization for film and media art in Brussels.
For Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg, Eva Giolo has curated a program featuring five short 16mm films from 2019 to 2024, which she will present herself. She also produced this year’s festival trailer, Opera.

A Tongue Called Mother beleuchtet die Beziehung zwischen Sprache, Gestik und Zugehörigkeit. Der Film hält auf behutsame Weise die Handlungen und Worte von drei Generationen von Frauen aus derselben Familie fest und zeigt Kinder, die lesen lernen und über Worte nachdenken, die sie durch ihren Körper gelernt und wieder vergessen haben.
A Tongue Called Mother depicts the relationship between language, gestures and affiliation. It slowly captures the actions and words of three generations of women in the same family and children learning to read, meditating on words learnt and forgotten through the body.

Flowers Blooming in Our Throats wurde kurz nach dem Corona-Lockdown auf 16-mm-Film gedreht und ist ein intimes, poetisches Porträt der fragilen Gleichgewichte, die den Alltag im häuslichen Umfeld bestimmen. Die Künstlerin filmt eine Gruppe ihrer Freunde in deren eigenen Wohnungen, während diese nach ihren Anweisungen verschiedene kleine Aktionen ausführen. Eva Giolo bewegt sich bewusst auf einem schmalen Grat, auf dem Gesten mehrdeutig bleiben und eine Art von Gewalt zum Ausdruck bringen, die nicht sofort erkennbar ist. Die Koexistenz von Gegensätzen findet sich auch im Titel wieder, der metaphorisch andeutet, wie die Schönheit eines Naturphänomens – und implizit auch die Liebe – zu einer erstickenden Kraft werden kann. Filmed on 16mm just after the lockdown caused by COVID-19, Flowers Blooming in Our Throats is an intimate, poetic portrait of the fragile balances that govern everyday life in a domestic setting. The artist films a group of her friends in their own homes performing various small actions in accordance with her instructions. Giolo chooses to walk a shifting line where gestures remain symbolically ambiguous, expressing a kind of violence that is not immediately recognisable. The coexistence of opposites can also be found in the title, which metaphorically suggests how the beauty of a natural phenomenon—and implicitly, love – can turn into a suffocating force. Silent Conversations besteht aus handbearbeiteten und selbst belichteten 16-mm-Umkehr- und Negativ-Farbfilmen und ist eine Studie aus 20-Sekunden-Sequenzen von Umarmungen, die sich als eine Reihe zeitbasierter Porträts entfaltet.
Hand-processed and self-printed 16mm reversal and negative color films, Silent Conversations is a study of twenty-second sequences of embraces that unfolds as a series of time-based portraits.

Ein Porträt von Fogo Island vor der Ostküste Kanadas. Eva Giolo nähert sich der einzigartigen Umgebung der Insel – menschlich, geologisch, floral – und suggeriert eine Untrennbarkeit zwischen den Landschaften und den Körpern, die sie bewohnen. Gedreht in ihrem unverkennbaren frontalen Stil, deuten eine Reihe von 16-mm-Tableaus auf die Beziehung zwischen Beobachtung und Komposition, zwischen Sehen und Träumen hin. A portrait of Fogo Island, off the Eastern coast of Canada. Giolo approaches the unique environment of the island – human, geological, floral – proposing an indivisibility between landscapes and the bodies that inhabit them. Shot in her distinctly frontal style, a series of 16mm tableaux hint to the relationship between observation and composition, between seeing and dreaming. Ein Film, der auf einem Glücksspiel und einer Reihe von Begegnungen in Werkstätten und Wohnungen in Rom basiert. Obwohl die Protagonist:innen nie gemeinsam in Erscheinung treten, sind sie durch ihre Handlungen untrennbar miteinander verbunden – Bedeutung wird durch Bewegung und die damit verbundenen Geräusche vermittelt und bildet so nach und nach eine visuelle Erkundung der Körperlichkeit.
The Demands of Ordinary Devotion regt zum Nachdenken an über den Herstellungssprozess, die Aussicht auf Mutterschaft sowie die Unsicherheiten in Bezug auf Schöpfung, Gleichgewicht und Komposition an.
A film constructed based on a game of chance and a collection of encounters in workshops and homes in the city of Rome. Although the protagonists never appear together, they are inextricably bound by their actions — meaning is conveyed through movement and its associated sound, slowly forming a visual exploration of physicality. The Demands of Ordinary Devotion invites a reflection on the process of making, the prospect of motherhood, and uncertainties in creation, balance and composition.
