»But culture, which continues to exist in the deepest layers of consciousness in the form of habits, convictions, ways of life and values of marginalised people, can mount fierce resistance to societal change.«
Cuba, in the early-1970s – a country emerging, in transition, full of hope and energy, and yet the lives of the once-marginalised have not only gotten easier. Cinema is a space for revolutionary thought. Sara Gómez is part of it. Her attention is devoted to the lives of those whom many do not see. How are they faring in the wake of the revolution?
Yolanda, an elementary school teacher, and Mario, who works in an omnibus factory, become a couple. While Yolanda strives to develop a pedagogical approach that integrates marginalized students, an effort that is met with incomprehension, Mario finds it difficult to let go of patriarchal role models. Their contrary ideals also put the relationship to the test, while at the same time critically reflecting the process of social transformation. For the people's values and norms haven’t simply changed with the construction of new housing – a new society does not materialise on demand.
De cierta manera celebrated its premiere on July 2, 1977 in the scope of the International Forum of New Cinema and is considered one of the most significant productions of the »grey« 1970s. It is Sara Gómez' only feature film, and was completed following her untimely death by Cuban filmmakers Tomas Gutierrez Alea and Julio Garcia Espinosa.
