Recurring Echoes from Iran illustrates how Iran’s turbulent history continues to shape its present. For many Iranians, the fear from the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s has never truly faded—it lingers, echoing anew amid the current military escalation. Yet Iran’s recent history is not defined solely by war, but also by persistent resistance. Protests, both past and present, have been attempts to negotiate civil rights, demand visibility, and envision alternative futures. The current conflict disrupts these processes, distracting, tightening controls, and empowering a regime that exploits crises to consolidate power. The four films in this program oscillate between inherited fear and lived resistance, centering voices that refuse to be silenced despite external and internal violence.

After crackdowns on street protests in Iran, a group of students and civilians turn to a new form of resistance: filming the unrest from behind their windows to create an alternative archive that challenges the state’s official records. When a woman is shot while recording from her car window, Mehraneh, a film student writes her a letter, recalling her own memories of the protests. As she writes, one question lingers: Can a revolution happen from behind a window?
