Looking at footage often of our queer (or not) elders who lived, and then passed away due to AIDS, one can sense a violent history already written, weighted, and burdened on their graves. Most footage are often originally meant for artistic purposes, be it simple home video, educational, or promotional video. Because they left behind these broken archives - fragmented, and to some, »unfinished« stories carry on, this program continues their act of will by bringing films that appropriate, dedicate, or play with such legacies.

In general, it is an impossible mission to cover all possible spectrums of those affected - in all regions and genders around the world. Shifting away from such trying to »cover«, it showcases »how to« make new possibilities - of archiving, re-connecting, re-telling, and reviving (literally) our common past, bringing it to the present.

The title comes from a quote within the film Lloyd Wong, Unfinished (2025), the second film in the program, which asks the fundamental question regarding film archive research »can we use something even if it was not intended to be so?« on the subject. The opening film Oceania (2025) depicts how a young Lebanese teenager in France uncovers the hidden treasure of (implied queer) continental love stories during the 1969 Pan-African festival in Algiers - an archive footage, speculated to belong to their own neighbor. It touches on very undiscussed AIDS histories amongst Arab immigrants in Europe (also implied in their short film before: Pacific Club). Out of that quiet moment, Playback (2019) brings back footage of one’s »neighbor«: from 1980s Cordoba Argentina during the dictatorship period, but then re-narratives the gap and fulfills the passed away’s wishes - completely diverging from the footage’s original intention. It is like a song, a spirit, kept sung by Black HIV+ men in Anthem (1991), an immortal piece on resilience and Black queer joy. The program concludes with the closing film from Brazil Scorpionikas – Countermanifesto (2024), which also brings back footage related to affected sex workers from 1890 and 1990s to now. It is only with their voices that we can bring the new world out of the past, forth into the present, »Everytime we kiss, we confirm the new world is coming« (Marlon Riggs).

Other projects that currently bring back conversations on AIDS/HIV include VisualAIDS, platform of commissioning artists making works on HIV, Toronto’s Viral Interventions (research project and conference, which gave birth partly to Lloyd Wong, Unfinished and Scorpionikas), Steps for future (looking at HIV issues in Africa) and Berlin’s Viral Intimacies (exhibition/program at nGbK), and many more.

Najib, a reserved 16-year-old teenager, experiences solitary holidays, engrossed in video games. With the disappearance of his elderly and lonely Algerian neighbor, he discreetly takes possession of the apartment keys, gradually immersing himself in the narrative of a bygone generation. This exploration encourages him to open up to the world, to explore new islands before they fade away.

In the early 1990s, Lloyd Wong began to make a work based on his experiences living with AIDS in Toronto, but he died from AIDS-related illnesses before completing it. For three decades, his work-in-progress was considered »long-lost« until it resurfaced at The ArQuives. In this experimental documentary, Lesley Loksi Chan combines Lloyd Wong's footage with fragments of her research notes to reflect on what it means to inherit images from queer communities and to attempt to understand someone through multiple takes. Rough and unprocessed, this film explores the meaning of incompletion.

(Berlinale)

Argentina in the late 1980s: catholic, conservative and shaped by a military dictatorship. »La Delpi«, the sole survivor of a group of trans women and drag queens, talks about how their shows in basement theatres galvanised the community and helped them in their struggle against AIDS and police violence. How they healed their wounds with lipstick, playback performances and improvised stage outfits. And how they invented happy endings for those who were to die. A farewell letter compiled from VHS memories. (Berlinale)

In a fusion of manifesto and performance, Scorpionikas crosses three continents to follow an insurgent collective—trans women, sex workers, and racialized and gender non-conforming voices—as they confront to dismantle the colonial and patriarchal systems that oppress them. Through radical acts of resistance, captivating performances, and intimate interviews, the film intertwines their stories with haunting archival footage: from the brothels of the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890s to the heart of 1990s Brazil, and a convent turned art center of 2024s Barcelona.
