Warten ist keine Pause. Es ist ein Regime. Auf Flughäfen, in Verwaltungen, an den Rändern der Stadt und in digital vermittelten Räumen wird Zeit als Schwebezustand organisiert: Bewegungen werden aufgeschoben, Entscheidungen vertagt. Warten diszipliniert Körper und reguliert Mobilität. Die Hoffnung richtet sich nicht länger auf Ankunft oder Transformation, sondern wird neu gefasst – als Fähigkeit, in einer auf unbestimmte Zeit verlängerten Gegenwart auszuharren.
On Waiting 1 beschäftigt sich mit dem Warten auf ein Ende. Die Filme bewegen sich durch Kontexte von Besatzung, Vertreibung und Fluchtbewegungen, in denen Zeit gedehnt und der Horizont fortwährend verschoben wird. Bilder werden zu einem Akt des Beharrens und verweigern die stillschweigende Normalisierung des Aufschubs.

Waiting is not the same as pausing. It is a power strategy. It disciplines bodies and regulates mobility. In airports, administrative buildings, at the edges of the city, and in digitally mediated spaces,time is organised as a state of uncertainty. The images and documents in the short film program On Waiting engage with the regime of waiting in different ways — transforming the cinema into a place where this uncertainty becomes visible, is questioned, and is temporarily re-set.
On Waiting 1 engages with waiting for an end. The films move through contexts of occupation, displacement, and migration, wheretime is stretched and the horizon continually deferred. Images become acts of persistence, resisting the silent normalization of delay.

Ali Akilah ist 96 Jahre alt und lebt in Amman, Jordanien. Geboren und aufgewachsen ist er in Lifta, einem palästinensischen Dorf im Westen von Jerusalem. Er ist in Beirut zum Gynäkologen ausgebildet worden und hat viele Jahre in Haifa praktiziert. Mit Gründung des Staates Israel veränderte sich sein Leben grundlegend. Ali Akilah beschwört persönliche Erinnerungen an wichtige Momente seines Lebens. Seine Worte sind von
Gefühlen »beständiger Unbeständigkeit« geprägt.

Ali Akilah is 96 years old and lives in Amman, in Jordan. He was born and grew up in Lifta, a Palestinian village in west Jerusalem. Having trained as a gynaecologist in Beirut, he subsequently practised this branch of medicine for many years in Haifa. His life changed fundamentally with the founding of the state of Israel. Ali Akilah conjures up personal memories of decisive moments in his life. His words and feelings are infused with a sense of »permanent impermanence«.

Während er einen Film über den israelisch-palästinensischen Konflikt dreht, wird ein iranischer Filmemacher plötzlich selbst in den Krieg hineingezogen, als Israel den Iran angreift. Gezwungen, mit seiner Familie aus Teheran zu fliehen, findet er in einem Haus in einem Vorort eine prekäre Zuflucht. Im Laufe von zwölf spannungsgeladenen Tagen verwandelt sich das, was als politischer Essay begann, in ein persönliches Tagebuch über Überleben und Exil. Anhand von Nachrichtenfragmenten, Bildern und Reflexionen setzt er sich mit Fragen nach Freiheit, Identität und Zugehörigkeit auseinander.

While making a film about the Israel-Palestine conflict, an Iranian filmmaker is suddenly thrust into war himself when Israel attacks Iran. Forced to flee Tehran with his family, he finds fragile shelter in a suburban home. Over twelve tense days, what began as a political essay transforms into a personal diary of survival and exile. Through fragments of news, images, and reflection, he confronts questions of freedom, identity, and belonging.
