Ein Dutzend leuchtender Augenpaare formiert sich im Dunkel der Nacht. Wem gilt ihr Blick? Das Rudel Hirsche scheint die Anwesenheit der technischen Bildfallen zu erahnen. Infrarotkameras, die zur Enttarnung von Feinden entwickelt wurden, zeigen nun das rege Treiben, das sich abseits menschlicher Blicke vollzieht. der andere tag protokolliert die eigentümliche Begegnung von nachtaktiven, wilden Tieren und technischen Gerätschaften in Abwesenheit des Autors.
A dozen glowing pairs of eyes form up in the darkness of the night. At whom is their gaze directed? The herd of deer seemingly sense the technical picture traps. Infrared cameras, developed to overcome the enemy’s camouflage, now show the bustle that takes place beyond the human gaze. the other day records the peculiar encounter of nocturnal wild animals and technical devices in absence of the author.

“Am I the only one still alive?”, fragt sich eine humanoide Blume, die durch einen wattierten Blütenteppich stapft und von mitfühlenden Kunststoffrehen umgarnt wird. Ein wundervoller Abgesang auf einen authentischen Naturbegriff zugunsten einer verkitschten Dekowelt, die von ihrer eigenen Mannigfaltigkeit ganz erschöpft scheint. Speaking Flowers ist ein farbtherapeutischer Super-8-Film gegen die alltägliche Tristesse.
“Am I the only one still alive?” a humanoid flower asks itself as it wades through a quilted carpet of blossoms and as compassionate plastic deer beguiles it. A wonderful swan song for an authentic concept of nature in favour of a sentimentalized decorative world that looks quite exhausted in its own diversity. Speaking Flowers is a color therapeutic super 8 film against the dreariness of everyday life.

Im dunkelgrünen Dickicht eines botanischen Gartens in Buenos Aires überlappen sich die wuchernden Blätter der Monstera deliciosa. Dazwischen zwei junge Menschen, die das Gelände erkunden. Ein idealer Treffpunkt für ein Rendezvous mit einem Biologiestudenten. Während dieser die Blätter eines Philodendron begutachtet, geraten im Gegenlicht sein lockiges Haar und die straffe Haut an seinem Hals ins Blickfeld.
In the dark green thicket of a Buenos Aires botanical garden, the proliferous leaves of the monstera deliciosa overlap. In between, two young people are exploring the area. An ideal meeting point for a rendezvous with a biology student. While he is examining the leaves of a philodendron, his curly hair and his neck’s toned skin come into view against the light.

Tiere setzen in Spielfilmen häufig affektive Reize und stehen den Protagonist:innen mal als treue Gefährten, mal als gefährliche Widersacher zur Seite. Auch wenn die Filmleinwand die animalischen Akteure en face zeigt, scheinen wir, mit einem süffisanten Lächeln, von oben herab auf sie zu schauen. Christoph Girardet und Matthias Müller dagegen stellen Nähe zum Menschlichen her, indem sie deckungsgleiche Grundemotionen wie Wut, Angst oder Panik auf den Tiergesichtern katalogisieren. Zugleich schaffen sie Raum, indem sie das Tier von seiner Funktion des dramaturgischen Weichenstellers entbinden, um ihm Widerständigkeit und Sprachlosigkeit zuzugestehen.
In fiction films, animals often create affective stimuli and accompany the protagonist as faithful companions or dangerous adversaries. Even when the silver screens shows the animal actors in full face, we seem to look down at them from up above with a smug smile. Christoph Girardet and Matthias Müller however create proximity to humanity by cataloguing congruent fundamental emotions such as anger, fear, or panic on the faces of the animals. At the same time, they create space by releasing the animal from its function as a dramaturgical switch operator in order to grant it resistance and speechlessness.
