Celluloid 19

Dyantini Adeline, Lab Laba Laba | 2020 | 16mm film, 16mm projector, Digital Video, Digital projector, Lightbox | 5’00 & 2’00

In the last years, mankind has tried various ways to avoid infection with the SARS-CoV 2 virus. This work is an experiment that draws parallels between preventive actions against the virus and the practice of processing a celluloid film at home. The filmmaker daubs the surface of a 16 mm black & white celluloid film, which contains a twenty seconds moving image of people washing their hands, with soap, disinfectant spray, vitamins, and herbs. The cleaned & sanitized celluloid film is then projected as a combination of negative and positive films—a reminiscent of the COVID-19 test results.
