Familienbilder sind kein leichtes Gepäck; unter dem stumpfen Lächeln tragen sie die Schatten der Kindheit. Jan Koester blickt in einen Stapel alter Fotografien, wie in eine Wunde, die nicht schließt. Die starren Bildlandschaften werden überraschend fluide und taktil erfahrbar – sie lassen sich wie eine gallertartige Masse neu modellieren. Aus Schmerz- und Schamerfahrungen emanzipiert sich peu à peu ein neues Körper- und Selbstbild.
Family pictures aren’t light baggage – under their dull smiles, they carry the shadows of childhood. Jan Koester looks at a pile of old photos as if it was a wound that won’t heal. The rigid imagery landscapes become surprisingly fluid and can be experienced in a tactile way – like a gelatinous mass, they can be remodelled. By and by, a new body and self-image emancipates itself out of experiences of pain and shame.
