Die Haskell Free Library, öffentliche Bibliothek und Oper, 1907 eröffnet, steht auf der internationalen Grenze im kanadischen Stanstead in der Provinz Québec und im amerikanischen Derby Line im Bundesstaat Vermont. Das Haus kann von beiden Seiten aus betreten werden und anders, als in anderen Bibliotheken, darf hier gesprochen werden. In 45th Parallel entfaltet sich ein Monolog und Gedanken-Spiel-Film über durchlässige Grenzen und undurchlässige Gesetze – und darüber, wie freie Bewegung, freies Wissen und freier Raum bedroht sind und umgekehrt, was das Betreten und Übertreten von Linien für das Leben von vielen bedeuten kann, wenn es um die Strafverfolgung geht.
The Haskell Free Library, public library and opera house, opened in 1907, stands on the international border in the Canadian town of Stanstead in the province of Québec and in the American town of Derby Line in the state of Vermont. The building can be entered from both sides and, unlike other libraries, people are allowed to speak here. In 45th Parallel, a monologue and thought-play film unfolds about permeable borders and impermeable laws – and about how free movement, free knowledge and free space are threatened and, conversely, what stepping on and crossing lines can mean for the lives of many when it comes to law enforcement.
